dragons and process, oh my!

I think it's about time I post a little design "work." I put work in italics simply because it really doesn't seem like work most of the time. I really love what I get to do.

One thing I always enjoy seeing from others is their process (Paula Becker and Gabi Campanario, in particular, are really terrific at this) and SO, that's what I thought I'd do here.

One of my latest assignments was to create an illustration for a dragon boat race sponsored by Remax. There were few restrictions on the piece which made it both liberating and fun. Also, I felt very lucky to be able to work with such cool subject matter. I'm a big fan of Miami Ink and was excited to get to create my own version of a traditional dragon...even if it wasn't in tattoo form.

Here was my first round of ideas:

The client decided they would like to see more of the boat in the image. The challenge for me was then to decide how to show the boat, but not complicate the image by adding people.
Here was my solution:

...which led to the final version you see above.

running low on ink and energy

Thank goodness for small things...that's all I've had the energy to draw for the last few days. Between school, design work and allergies I'm pretty much wiped at the moment.

yawl come back now, ya hear?

So the other day I was having an issue with leaving out words and today I'm adding superfluous ones.... I don't know about you, but I can almost hear my accent popping out of this post....sure do!

no more cold feet

If the first week is any indication, this is going to be a great semester. My students are great, the energy level is high and the questions are flowing! I remember when I did some theater back in high school that the energy of the audience made a huge impact on the way I felt about a performance. The same thing totally applies to teaching.

soap opera

Ahhh, the joys of finishing a sketch, posting it and then realizing you forgot a word in it's text.

the groundhog's groundhog

School starts back up today, and as a result, my posts may be a little sporadic this week as I try to get organized. As always, thank you so very much for checking in on what's happening in my sketchbook. Every comment you leave means so much to me.

faculty feet

The school semester starts back up next week. In preparation, this week has been filled with meetings. Really, I try my best not to draw in them, but sometimes I just have to...the set up is simply too good.

Notice anything missing in this drawing?

EDM Challenge: My Sink

I've been skipping over this EDM challenge for a while. I can think of few drawings less exciting than the kitchen sink. However, night before last, when Edgar and I were sitting in the kitchen, talking and avoiding doing the dishes it seemed like the perfect time to turn my attention towards it...and it really wasn't that bad afterall.

By the way, the subject of our conversation was..."have you ever thought about the fact you will likely be washing dishes everyday for the rest of your life AND what would it be like to be a celebrity and NEVER have to do your own dishes?" Not exactly deep thoughts...but I'm ok with that.

here today, landfill tomorrow

Someday, when I have a lot of energy, not only am I going to draw everything I eat...but also everything I throw's sure to be equally disturbing.

EDM Challenge: Something "Mom"

I completely understand if you are questioning what this drawing has to do with the EDM topic of "draw something mom." It's a stretch, but let me explain... My mom is good at so many things I'm not. For instance, she has a beautiful soprano voice and can sing the French national anthem perfectly...despite the fact she doesn't know French. She is great at geography. And, she can fold a fitted sheet perfectly...who else can fold a fitted sheet? I certainly can't.

My mom also has perfectly organized closets. Not one thing is out of place. In fact, everything is color coordinated and pressed (nothing goes in wrinkled.) With this being said, I simply can't looked at my messy closet and not be reminded of the ways I am not like my mom.

haute cuisine

I'm not exactly sure at what point I stopped drawing everything and started drawing only the things I eat. Maybe this isn't entirely true, but it seems as though that's all that my pen has been capturing as of late. Actually, that might be a good diet plan. Rather than writing down everything I put in my mouth, I'll draw it. Interesting...I'll have to give that some thought.

I'm very inspired by the many scrumptous food blogs out there including Ronell Van Wyk's My French Kitchen. Unfortunately, on my end, rather than serving up nectarines with rose wine syrup, I'm microwaving Indian food in a box.

a clue

As I was sketching this church over my lunch break, I thought about Louie, my 10 year-old son. I wondered if many years from now my son would ever go through my sketchbook to find out or get to know more about his dad. Would he scrutinize this sketch and be able to decipher at what time and where I was sitting while I drew this? Would he ever visit this peaceful place in which I enjoyed so many lunch-breaks and thought of him?

chain blogging

Karen asked me to post a photo of the credit card necklace I drew the other day. Before I wear it again I need to round the corners a little. There is nothing pretty about being poked and prodded by your jewelry.

Can't draw an iPod without thinking about this video.

EDM Challenge: My Dinner

(in technicolor!)
Perhaps its because I'm Southern...really I'm not sure...but I have a love affair with fresh tomato sandwiches. Love them, love them, love them. One might even be in the running for my last meal in prison...not that I'm planning on going there anytime soon. But just in case.

EDM Challenge: A Piece of Jewelry

I really like the finer things in life...take this expensive piece of jewelry here...
If you add up the limits of the credit cards I cut up to make it, oh I'd say the necklace is worth at least $7000. Ha. Luckily, I'm not cutting up the credit cards because I've overspent, only because they have expired. I have a hard time throwing away things like this, so I decided to turn my trash into treasure instead. I guess luxury is all in the eyes of the beholder.

Drawing at the bowling easy job.

rise and shine

I woke up this morning at 5:30 with an insatiable urge to draw, so much so that it pulled me out of bed. I'm not complaining as I've been in a creative lull the last two days.

I am more than a little embarrassed to post this drawing. It's a self portrait, but as any of you who know me in person can confirm, it looks NOTHING like me. The proportions are all wrong, my cheeks are way rounder, etc., etc., etc.... Ah, but it's practice and practice is the goal.

I spent about 10 minutes on this...a quick exercise I can definitely stand to do more of.
